Artist Statement

Michael Kimmelman states in his book The Accidental Masterpiece: On the Art of Life and Vice Versa that, “Art promises wonderment--- an access to realms beyond the everyday, through the experience of which we may understand the everyday better.”

Working in a variety of mediums including installation, drawing, painting and printmaking, my art explores the diverse relationships and interactions that we have with the natural world and our surroundings.  I search through tangible landscapes and structures that often show signs of wear, human impact and mystery, then reconstruct them into an emotional language.  Nature is cast as a divine entity for us to experience and control.  Reflecting on images that I encounter daily: abandoned plants left in alleyways, bits of garbage on the ground spread like confetti, rocks covered with graffiti, plastic bags caught in trees like ribbons, and concrete barriers holding “natural settings”, I find situations that quietly reveal hidden narratives about our connections to each other and the world around us.
