Artist Statement

Technological products become obsolete at an increasingly rapid pace. Throughout my career as an engineer, I have seen my share of technologies come and pass. My work references electronic design, a technology that has extremely fast turnover rates, as well as letterpress/relief printing, a centuries old technology that is quickly being surpassed by electronic printing. As a starting point for most of the works, I use electronic boards from discarded electronic products, plentiful in our garbage dumps (who needs a boombox today in the age of iPod?). In some cases, I print directly off these parts using relief printing. In other cases, these electronic parts become a source of inspiration, as their constituent design elements are re-contextualized and transformed esthetically. For example, these discarded boards may get placed in settings inspired by classical portrait engravings, become paper doll costumes, get read as maps, or become a platform for discovering the line of separation between analog and digital.

My works are not making the case to preserve these technologies; they are merely beautifying their transition or demise. The very slow process of printmaking and drawing entirely bypasses the inherent speed and precision of everything electronic and transforms unknown or disregarded objects into a meditative experience.
