Paper Plate Drawings

Without planning to, earlier this year in my studio, I took a brush loaded with black ink and started doodling on a paper plate. A drawing emerged. Then I did another and another, and more after that. As I finished them, I thumbtacked them up on the wall in front of me. The plates ended up forming a large triangle. I also noticed an interesting narrative was taking place. Not a linear narrative, but a mosaic of varying images that were functioning as a whole. It was like looking at one of my filled drawing pads, not one page at a time, but seeing all of the pages at once.

I realized that drawing on these paper plates liberated my drawing style as well as my technique. At $2.49 for a one hundred count, I didn’t feel the need to fuss about subject matter and composition. I just dove in with my bamboo brush and let things happen. Of course, this period of grace didn’t last long. I found that I had to plan and conceptualize the drawings to keep this project growing. But I also discovered that I could mix spontaneous plates in with the more realized ones and that these two kinds of drawings together still had a synergy that worked.

Lastly, I'd like to say, I enjoy the humble pathos of these paper plates, that after the party feel that they emit.

I am calling the large triangle formation Wall 1 simply because it came first. It consists of 33 nine-inch plates. Wall 2 consists of 32 plates and is in the shape of a parallelogram.

I have ideas about new large-scale groupings (more plates are already finished), but limited wall space in my studio is holding me back.

Note: I have also included 3 non-paper plate drawings to the portfolio for variety.

Bio / Résumé

I was raised in Pasadena, California, but when I was 13, I was abruptly moved to midtown Manhattan. This sudden change of scenery influenced the way I see things today. My images tend to depict environments with unlikely inhabitants, or inhabitants in unlikely environments. I try to give these juxtapositions some mischief, while making a statement on the human condition, either politically, physically or spiritually.

I want the viewer to be challenged and entertained by this mixture of the macabre and the playful.
