All all the many media in which I work, I’m interested in how the fluid & dynamic chaos entering our sensory organs becomes concretized into repressive social forms: opinions, rules, dogmas, creeds, ideologies etc.
I’m particularly interested in how language, sign & ritual reinforce this process, & in how they can be used to subvert it.
Much of my research focuses on the impact of both highly-strategized, institutionalized methodologies (pedagogy, advertising, narrative) & random or subliminal ones (accident, the montage of the quotidian, chance procedures).
This research itself usually gets sublimated during the actual making process; at least this is the case in my painting, drawing & sculpture.
I experiment with the physical properties & psychological allusions of non-traditional materials (such as Liquid Paper, iodine, mercurochrome, cement, spar varnish, paper dartboards) to make situations and relationships in which “found” material can “be itself” without the constraints of expectation, judgement or convention.
While the frequent inclusion of collage elements introduces gestural, semiotic and narrative references, the reckless & spontaneous interactions of materials create unexpected results over which I have only intuititive & partial control, which is a way of subverting my own learned behaviors & opinions.
For me the most successful works are the ones that resist visual resolution and hover between representation and abstraction, referring to both while capitulating to neither.
