Artist Statement

My practice oscillates between two ongoing interests.  It is autobiographic and intuitive – I choose and explore a medium with the intention of representing personal experiences by abstract, representational or decorative means. It is also based on material and form where I use logic and play to create new systems and methods of production for each material or tool I am exploring. I have produced bodies of work that are unique objects and hand-made multiples, drawings, paintings, sculptures and hybrids of these. What connect these works are an interest in form, an exploration of multiples and repetition, and an engagement in labor intensive and process-based practices. Although the impetus comes from personal experience, the resulting artwork is formal, bridging material and time-based aspects of production to the intricacies of today’s world.

Spin is an ongoing series of drawing animations created from an archive of all the possible forms that the 21 different round gears of Super Spirograph can produce: the original drawings were photographed to create the digital archive. SPIN is the slow visualization of each image accompanied by the sound of the pen repetitively circling on the paper. Spin (2011) is systematically organized in layers creating a seamless loop of weaving lines. A second archive was produced in Photoshop for Rewind and Swirl where speed and colour are further explored.

Imaging the invisible developed from a questioning of the effects the surrounding environment may have on our wellbeing. The gallery space was transformed with intensely saturated lines of fluorescent “artificial” colours that covered walls, ceiling and floor to suggest and make visible, poetically, the energies that fill and have transformed the public and private spaces in which we inhabit; full of the invisible vibrations of electromagnetic fields as radio waves, microwaves, etc. in this present technological era.
