Artist Statement

Inspired by nature, science and history I am currently exploring ice, great expeditions and sky to gain an understanding for the world. The power and beauty of nature at its wildest and most uncontrollable state continue to fascinate mankind, stories are told, experiments made as we challenge this capacity.
I research ice and sky as symbolic matter representing utopia, hope, future, strength and greatness creating an illusion of perfection in media and commercial society, being presented to us in a utopian context whereas in reality nature as we know it is breaking free.

The hail-series Lineup, World Champion Formation and Aurora, raise questions about man versus nature.
The hail stones in these drawings are natural size, from all over the world between the year 1900 and 2005. Some have detailed information about weight and size, others are based on stories and myths. The hail drawings bring us to awareness of the potential danger of nature and also mankind eager to control this unpredictable force. Hail causes nearly one billion dollars (US) in damage to property and crops annually and is the number one reason for weather modification substantially sponsored by insurance companies.

The line-series is shot during a moment called magic hour. This moment appears before and after sunrise and sunset, at which time a specific photographic effect is achieved with the quality of the light. The moment is frequently used in commercial purpose such as marketing of cities through their skylines. The sky contributes with its dramatic color and enhance the contour of the city. Erasing the image from information I leave only a light trace. The line-series comment on aesthetic and spectacular appearance in modern society by disassemble its visual impact.

I see my photographic work as drawing performances where my presence is represented by a line of light. For me, both photography and drawing is a physical act, emphasizing an emotion, using pencil on paper or light on photo plate.
