Artist Statement

In my recent body of work I have been creating oil paintings and works on paper that present themselves as woven surfaces. The paint is extruded to create a threadlike mark that slowly builds a highly textured surface, which continuously responds to the changing environment where light and shadow are in constant flux. The intricate structures imply time passing methodically between moments of control and spontaneity. In addition, I have recently begun using yarn as a tool for drawing. As a painter I have been searching for a drawing process that feels analogous to my painting process. My paintings rely on textures that traditional materials on paper have not been able to recreate. The yarn fulfills this purpose. Instead of literally weaving it, I use it as a pre-fab line, available in a gamut of weights, thicknesses, colors, finishes and textures. As I wrap around the canvas or linen, I am able to explore composition, color relationship, geometry and linear relationships in a quick, spontaneous, immediate way that can as easily be undone. Immediacy is something I have always associated with drawing – the process of thinking and doing simultaneously.
