Artist Statement

We form strong attachments to the places we call home. Years later we can imagine walking through a former residence and find everything that made an impression on us still in place. To explore these mental structures I create large-scale drawings that map familiar spaces from memory.

When using my memory to lay out a space I imagine moving through it.  Rooms are presented from within, mimicking the way we “look around”. In Thirty Years, Basement I archive each item in my parents’ cellar, assigning different orientations to the objects, shelves and furniture depending on where I “stand” to “look” at them.

Our eyes can easily shift from macro to micro, comprehending a tree as one entity and then zooming in to examine each leaf independently. Our minds make similar “wholes” out of complex systems even when it’s impossible to see all of its components at once. In Ten Years, 123 Bedford I collate every photograph taken over a decade in a suburban home. Years of snapshots are visible simultaneously, compressed onto a model floor-plan of the house. In my “light drawings” I record light moving across a room during a single afternoon. Using tape I outline the light cast through the window at regular intervals. I then paint the room and remove the tape, highlighting the room’s original surfaces. The many “exposures” form a unified trajectory, which like our memory conceals some details and reveals others.

Over time entire rooms have faded from my mother’s memory of her grandparents’ farm while fireplaces and a window full of glass bottles remain in tact. Mapping her recollection, I drew a location I have never visited. Scientists have found that each time we recall a memory our brain reconstructs it anew. The original experience is reinterpreted and replaced. Thus, memories of my past homes are recreations - recreated once again in my drawings. Rendering a place from someone else’s memory is as truthful or inaccurate as drawing from my own memory, both are reinventions.
