Artist Statement

The recent work of Dan Mills addresses and incorporates a variety of themes and imagery including cartography, imperialism, and satire. Mills exhibits extensively, with recent solo shows in Chicago, Santa Monica and Tianjin. His work has been included in numerous group exhibitions and publications on subjects including mapping, politics, and humor. The US Future State Atlas was published as a book by Perceval Press in 2009. Mills is included in Katherine Harmon's book The Map as Art: Contemporary Artists Explore Cartography. Biography

Mills grew up in upstate New York. Education: BFA, Rochester Institute of Technology, 1978; MFA, Northern Illinois University, 1981. He lived in Chicago from 1981-1994 and was active as an artist and curator there. He lives in Lewiston, Maine and directs the Bates College Museum of Art. Mills is the son of the late artists E. Andrew and Virginia Ward Mills
