Artist Statement
When I say my drawings are the work behind my paintings, I mean it literally. Reversing the normal order of things, I don't use drawing as a preparatory step. Instead, I draw to document the mess left behind when the paintings are finished. I draw the notes-to-self, infused with painting notes, grocery lists and errands to keep track of, the painting marks and level lines, and the holes in the wall from screws and pins. Some of the drawings, such as Tape #1 and #2, are of the backs of other drawings. Some are of the place where a previous drawing was pinned, or of the notation, made in tape on my studio wall, of where the drawing I'm working from should go (see Metastudio). Though seemingly straightforward, they take on a playful, metaphysical quality.
