Artist Statement

In my current work, I have focused on ways of seeing space, exploring the relationship between the formal image - that which is physical, relating directly to the surface - and the perceptual image - that which is represented in the figurative context.

These drawings are made on layers of epoxy resin, sanded and poured directly on top of each other.  The layers, the transparent surfaces - force the images to work with/and against each other to create a dialogue between the formal layers (colored dots) and the figurative layers (the graphite drawing).

I have used architecture as a subject for many years.  At first, architectural imagery was a representation of the concept of space itself, giving it form and dimension. One can think of a building and have a mental concept of navigating this space.  Hence, archictecture was a structure that was both physical and abstract.  As a metaphorical tool, this theme was well suited to the process of drawing.  Currently, I use the architectural space as a structural form to link the layers together, providing an x-ray like view into a space that expresses both illusionary and physical depth and proportion.

The spaces are loosely grouped into themes … Dwellings (Masha 2011), Vaults (Anubis 2011) and Fictional Spaces (Divan 2011, from Mika Waltari's description of Suleiman's palace in Constantinople, "The Wanderer")
