Artist Statement

My work is an intertwined construction in which drawing, geometric-abstraction and appropriation are central interests and also critical tools.  My work is influenced and shaped by modernism and also by the artistic, social and political movements of the late 60’s and 70’s. The space between these historical poles is a gray area of utopias, dreams and failures; my work sets it self the task of finding new readings, connections and disparities within these histories.

In installations as well as in drawings or prints on paper I have developed an interest in reformulating pre existing drawings and designs. My influences come from both the art history as well as from graphic design. I consider the re-use and re-staging of previous cultural signs and images as s research moment, for my self and also for the viewer.

During the last 5 years I have developed a series of works that function as exhibition design. Composed by two-dimensional panels (either wood based of made with fabric) these are drawings that organize space; they divide and arrange it into a set of intermedial spatial constructions. By doing this they redirect the viewer’s circulation, affecting their perception of space and its contents. These are flexible installations; they can work on their own as partitions and can also work in relationship to other art works (mine or from other artists).  Therefore they work simultaneously into several directions; on the one hand they behave as modernist references and as temporary architecture, as well as exhibition design and in some cases as decorative art (the fabric panels).

The paper drawings and prints I do intend to create a body of work with a different intensity of research and practice, these are more manageable and also more intimate. Each one is made to be in a way confronted by another piece; as well as my installations, these smaller works are open and incomplete. With this I intend to produce moments of participation, a dynamic dialogue and exchange of ideas within my work and with the viewer. This could be read as an alternative and as a critique to the commodification of culture.
