Artist Statement
While incorporating photography, video, and sculpture, the majority of my output manifests in drawings. I have found drawing to be a very instantaneous, but very intimate way to reflect or relate to an image. In each of my explorations, I strive to maintain the unedited purity and integrity of the original while at the same time capturing the heart of my overwhelming fascination with my often peculiar sources. My drawing has been informed more than anything by years spent as a theme park caricature artist during high school. Being stuck with a permanent marker and no option of erasing helped to hone certain skills, and the necessity of making your first line your best has managed to stick with me throughout the years. This confident, sure and very clear approach to drawing is a constant in my work. What results are very linear, deliberate drawings on paper. They are at the foundation of most people’s art training but continue to be fulfilling to me. The ability of a drawing to exert authority in its simplicity is one of the reasons I still find it exciting as a finished work. I enjoy the challenge of working with the bare minimum.
