Artist Statement

The translation from photographic document to handmade image results in inaccuracies including perspectival shifts and misinterpretations. These slips generate new meanings and, like a parallax, one context is replaced for another.  Photographic flaws such as light leaks, lens distortions and blurs suggest larger metaphors including the fallacy of memory and the intangibility of time, distance, and loss. Culled from amateur photographs in various stages of deterioration, my drawings suggest a peripheral vision, a record of anonymous histories, and the futility of their preservation. Part archive, part fiction, my work is a testament to the minutia dividing what is actual and imaginary.
