Artist Statement

As an artist of South Asian descent, my art practice is about the challenge of translating the legacy of ideas that define India. I want my works to be about the transmission of this heritage through new means and expressions. It is a way to engage others unfamiliar with its philosophy and culture. Critically, it is also about re-imagining the received history of forms by making them alive through reinterpretation. It is a way to reinvest tradition with new meaning and relevance. Stylistically, my approach is to appropriate the mechanics and language of Indian and Western art and refract it through the prism of my multicultural heritage. It is a way for me to bridge the bi-cultural differences that define me.

The drawings presented here are a fusion of the Tantric idea of making yantras (symbolic abstract images created for ritual, but is primarily a mechanism to focus the mind and body to make a visual image) and the history of western abstract painting. The key to these drawings is the smallness of the images and the use of common throwaway materials. In this sense, the emphasis is on the devotion and concentration in making the object, and the ephemeral quality of the artifact.
