Artist Statement

Overstanding.

"That's what she said."
(Author unknown)

What matters is not the dots, but what bridges them. Not the symbols but the meaning in between.

In 1999 the front page of The New York Times featured a photograph that showed Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus being escorted home by four riot policemen, wearing Ninja Turtle combat boots and padded breastplates. Remember? I think someone said that "The aesthetic of a sustainable society still has yet to take form. But we can speculate: it is honest, simple way of being." Existing and observing.

Fall 2009. My first official sculpture ever: a gray metal chair facing the wall. The back of the chair reads "SCULPTURE" in brown stencil lettering - a signature of the department. Effort is a little above zero. Make shit up about what you see or take it for granted. It is a sculpture, and that's the way it is. I could have graduated right after the first class, that's what I believed then.

January 12, 2011, notebook entry: "I promised myself not to freak out today. And then... I saw inside psychopath magician's performance case at a yard sale: holographic kaleidoscope, glass prism, doll head, old book pictures, all in a strange painted cardboard box." It is true as Sol Lewitt said, that a drawing of a line is a real line, yet a drawing of a person is not a real person.

Yesterday I spoke with a Verizon representative over the phone. I was complaining and canceling my contract, but the joyful laughter of the young lady on the other end totally made my day. When did time begin? Do you have time? The future is not for us, but for those we create it for. Take it and flip it, then flip it again. Maybe the cigarette ad is right: "Life is not in recession." But, what would you do if you knew everything?..
Nothing.
