Artist Statement

My work is typically comprised of drawings, paintings and found objects. These works rely on multiple contradictory forms of representation; assimilating cartoons, abstraction, text, and rendered forms into a morass of emotionally deficient constructs. The main metaphor in my work is the depiction of emotional “baggage” as actual baggage. The forms I draw are awkwardly piled on each other, oscillating with potential energy, or tentatively touching. In order to emphasize the emotional relationship between drawn forms, I arrange the drawings in contextual groups where they interact and relate to one another in the gallery space.

Because my work can simultaneously be a picture, a symbol and a story, my work is full of complex interrelationships that can best be described as a hypernarrative, or metanarrative. In order to reign in the scope of such a project, I tend to choose all of my materials, forms, and images based on their ability to effectively communicate a form of personal or social deprecation. I like to think that my work evokes an emotional response, first and foremost, and then rewards continued inspection with a deeper narrative. To this end, investigative viewer participation is required for the full impact of the work.

If my work is intended to communicate an emotional or psychological state to a viewer, and the work is dependent on a certain amount of viewer participation, then I am comfortable asserting that I am a form of entertainer. Much of my work is created to challenge and amuse an unknown viewer, and many of the difficulties associated with my work stem from an attenuated visual conversation with this assumed viewer. The work then functions as a critique not just of myself, but of the viewers I am attempting to entertain.
