Artist Statement

Cutting In is the title of chapter 67 of Hermann Melville's Moby-Dick or, The Whale, in which the author describes the skinning of a whale, "...by spiralizing it". My use of the term - as a deliberate inversion of the verb "to cut out" - is an attempt at a more precise description of my three-dimensional works, which I see as cuttings or drawings in space. Paper-cutting - as a process of creation via subtraction - is more akin to printmaking or carving than to the more usual additive processes of many other two-dimensional media.

My 12 year long exploration of the medium has variously involved experimentation with scale, with both representational and non-representational form, with two- and three-dimensional formats, and with the inclusion of other media such as light, video, sound, and performance. Since 2008 I often work on site, creating large-scale installations that might exist only for the space of a few days, or evolve during the exhibition period. These works explore the material possibilities of cut paper, and seek potential intersections between material, theme, and technique. Combining a deliberate approach with an improvised one therefore, the resultant works are true manifestations of the almost contrapunctal forces at work in the creative process itself.
