Artist Statement
I am interested in examining the physical and emotional conditions of certain objects. I use materials imbued with Chinese history and also from personal subject matter. Many of the materials and motifs used are sourced from my immigrant parents' restaurant, the first of its kind in my hometown. Combining sculpture, drawing, and conceptual practices, my work examines issues of race and ethnicity. I manipulate certain inherent contradictions in the materials I choose. What looks sharp is soft, fabric is limp but stiff, structures look heavy, yet empty at the same time. I seek to investigate what Chinese culture and identity can be. How information is diluted, interpreted, and reinterpreted is a central theme.
