Artist Statement

Galliano's work, like a blank page, what Barthes would call ‘ecriture degree zero’, but using silent, blurred, photorealism, embodies these questions. He creates faces with no names, portraits with no specific context, situations captured with the detached eye of an observer with no emotion. His images, no matter how banal, or completely without ‘meaning’ or surface symbolism, still draw us into their depths – but only to leave us with our own field of symbolic representation. Visual ecology, amongst many other things, seems to be the overriding motif.... A struggle to fix in memory the many voids left in your mind – blank amnesia, absence of feeling, the emptiness of a one night stand." (1)

Nameless faces, placeless portraits, situations captured by an impassive observer… as time passes Daniele Galliano becomes so certain of his intentions that he can candidly display his own contradictions, his anarchoid painterly style, depicting subjects that resemble but aren’t, narrating a “non troppo” reality, shamelessly displaying his own impure gaze:

“Everything that surrounds me winds up belonging to me. A surface view that attempts to fill the void between interior and exterior, also through the representation of behavior and situations that are based on stereotypes obsessively repeated. My gaze is ‘impure’, etched with detailed images that unveil the everyday world so clearly that they border on vulgarity.” (2)
