Artist Statement

Atlas is a circular labyrinth where myriad of events flow, overlap, converge, and transfigure each other forming and dissolving contents embedded in them. It is a gradual process of abstracting and composing multiple events in which images transform into a massive abstract flow of marks. Suspension and overlapping of images represent the circularity of time and memory in which past, present, and future are seen on a same plane and yet maintain distance from each other. Images used in this work are traced from various sources that reflect personal and public interests and events. Tracing is a process of synthesizing fragmentary and temporary experiences of everyday life that, as a whole, become a bedrock of individual and collective memory.

Surfaces is a gradually expanding landscape of events and places. Like in Atlas series, images from various sources are disintegrated and accumulated as sediments of memory. Through filtering, tracing, and cutting process, images distance from their sources and become part of a stratum of abstract patterns.

Flat sediment-like quality of this installation reflects the idea of image as an outer crust of memory where abstract thoughts and senses become a perceptible matter and emerge to the surface, like a thin film of dirt above the water.
