Artist Statement

The act of drawing/doodling/marking is an obsessive act.  I am interested in why we develop certain neurosis and means of adjusting. By repetition, repeating the same action I try to present it in a visual form. When I make squares, patterns and other marks, I become part of the process. I then make decisions as to the color and continue to work until the finished product is a visual representation of energy, process and habit.

I am concerned about our ways of living and how we are contained in a box-square shaped dwelling places.  How does this affect our behavior and does this way of living form our need for structure?   My work explores the human psychological experience formed by architectural environments.

In December 2009 I took part in a project of Foundation id11_Flatlands in Delft, the Netherlands. I worked in a semi-abandoned flat slated to be demolished, in the housing project neighborhood of Poptahof. Communities like these are often called Concrete Communities. I created artwork in each room of this flat to represent my experience, while the neighborhood was undergoing a transformation. People were forced to abandon their flats in these dwelling. They threw out most of their possessions into a large dumpster in front of the flats. I used many of their possessions in my installations.
