Artist Statement

The images I make are like quick glances. They are fragmentary, little moments made monumental. My paintings are about memory and interpretation, where light and nature play a pivotal role. They reference twentieth-century American Modernist painting as well as Japanese and Chinese landscape painting. I am especially interested in the differences between traditional Eastern and Western sensibilities concerning the artist’s relation to nature and the approach to perspective. This is contrasted in my work by a more instinctive visual vocabulary which comes from contemporary culture: design magazines, advertisements, and architecture to name a few.

My natural inclination is toward variety and exploration, the discovery of fresh painting moments, simplicity, and sophisticated color. I want my colors to be like standing in a snow storm in a forest at dusk or like being in a landscape looking into the sun. There is an overall glow or glare that forces the viewer to take an extra second to see the image. It is more about understanding the differences in the colors than their similarities. But more importantly, there is an emotion associated with being in those spaces at those moments that I want to capture in my paintings.
