Artist Statement
In the series “Zoned” I explore a fluid and interconnected world. Inspired by biological structures and digital technology, Modernism and Indian Miniatures, I examine how systems generate structure and organize individual parts into a whole. These works on paper are made using a form of “sampling” or “surface printing.” I start with everyday materials, such as rubber mesh and cardboard that I coat with pigment and acrylic dispersion and then stamp onto the panel surface. This process allows me to work within a structure and at the same time give up control. The variableness of the surface printing creates the irregularities and intricacies of a handmade object; the patterning of the materials I use evokes a digital world of systems. In addition, I cut and collage the paper, creating a visual mosaic of interlacing space and color. Through the physicality of pigment and the application of a process, I explore on the reciprocal relationship between the organic and non-organic and let it shape my work.
