Artist Statement

My work deals with the oversimplification and invention that often takes place while investigating, categorizing and learning that which is beyond our immediate senses. What occurs spontaneously and intuitively while making art is reflected upon, reworked, categorized, and/or dissected. This call and response mirrors what we often do, assigning purpose and structure to otherwise chaotic or mysterious systems.

The impetus was different for each work in this portfolio. The overall concept and physical shape emerged from a moment or idea often filled with a

mixture of awe and anxiety. For example, “Test” came from my familiar experience of learning and forgetting at equal rates and “Indication of Oversight”

was born through observing the current crisis of our monetary system. My use of scale is both an attempt to recreate that initial feeling for the viewer, and a

reference to institutions whose purpose it is to disseminate information.

Most recently I have focused on creating parodies of conventional wisdom, taking an initial idea or mark and then proceeding to divide it visually and

conceptually. The wall-based installation, “Gray Matter”, was conceived as an abstract representation of popular psychology's understanding of the separate functions indicative to the right and left hemispheres of the brain. While usually adhering to the division in the wall, at times the visual vernacular interacts and morphs from one to the other. The piece “Countries I've Conquered” began with

expressionistic and fluid abstract marks of color, developing into land masses which were then segmented into countries and colonized with flags, the process itself reflecting a reductive and rudimentary form of globalization.

Artist Bio / CV

Susan Murrell was born and raised in New Mexico and currently lives and works in Hood River, Oregon.  She earned her MFA in Painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia, and a BA in Fine Arts with an emphasis in printmaking from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado.

She attended graduate school on an Academic and Artistic Merit Fellowship, and was a recipient of the New York Workspace Residency, where she pursued independent studio work, research, and completed an internship with a commercial gallery in Manhattan.  Before moving to the South for school, Susan lived in Portland, Oregon for many years where she was the owner/operator of a printmaking studio and an active participant in the Alberta Arts District where her studio was located.  She has been awarded many honors such as the Gordon and Vivian Gilkey Center for the Graphic Arts Membership Award at the Portland Art Museum and a residency at the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts in 2006.

Susan’s printmaking background has given her a special affinity toward works on paper, although she also utilizes painting, sculpture, encaustic and manufactured objects in her installations.  Her current creative interests explore the acquisition and recall of knowledge as well as the parallels between our analysis of the natural world and the scrutiny with which she views her creative process.

Susan continues to exhibit her work nationally.  Her work has been reviewed in the Oregonian, the Portland Mercury, and Reno News and Review.  Solo exhibitions in 2008 include the Las Cruces Museum of Art in New Mexico, galleryHomeland in Portland, Oregon, and Sheppard Fine Arts Gallery in Reno, Nevada.
