Artist Statement

Matt Ellwood  ‘Smoking Tom Ford’ at GSCA, Sydney, Sep 2013.

Excerpts from the essay by Anna Madeleine, Sydney arts writer.

… ‘Smoking Tom Ford’ is a continuation of Ellwood’s appropriation based drawing practice with the context taken from the 2013 Tom Ford eyewear spring/summer advertising campaign. However, the text from these advertisements has been substituted with smoking health warnings in Russian, Korean and Slovenian. As a result, the works are loaded with multiple readings into the appeal of consumerism and advertising on one hand, and the extensive debate on smoking laws (plain packaging, tax, export market and health concerns) on the other. They constantly shift between contrasting meanings: advertising and art; mass production and the hand-made; and the glamour of fashion and the blatant warnings that smoking (in some ways fashion itself) can kill us…aspects such as typography inform these decisions. Tom Ford uses a Gotham typeface, and cigarette health warnings usually come in Helvetica, both similar san serif fonts...associated with recent events and brandings that show the importance of typography in communication. Gotham was used in Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, and Helvetica is widely used in signage and advertising, including for Apple iPhones. Ellwood uses these fonts to illustrate the power of typography as a universal signifier: even when shown to an audience in languages that most of us won’t understand, we know the words are making a big bold statement that we should be absorbing...

For 'On The Table' (a project that brings drawing into public library spaces around the world, founded by artist Renato Orara) I presented the research methodologies behind my recent Smoking Tom Ford series of charcoal drawings via a display on the large central table in the E H McCormick Research Library in Auckland, New Zealand. The discussion provided an insight into related concepts, research, experimentation, drawing processes, and exhibition strategies.
