Artist Statement

Using the objects that surround me as a point of departure, I am interested in how these mundane objects can stand in for, and become metaphors for anything and everything.  Clusters of objects or marks become metaphors for other clusters, like a molecule is a cluster of atoms or a human being a cluster of cells.  The objects in the drawings come together to make a larger form.  In this way, the objects start to become more a part of a whole than individual things.  Parts or all of the composition start to diffuse into each other, compressing space while at the same time creating atmosphere.  In my drawings, I think of the accumulation of marks as a constellation that gives an indication of form.  The marks do not confine these forms to a specific outline, which allows the white of the paper to become the unifying element that fuses everything together.
