Artist Statement

I work in painting, collage, video and performance, engaging the schizophrenia and intoxicating cacophony of postmodern capitalist culture. I am interested in exploring and testing the boundaries between images and received ideas. This often entails working with dissonant images and materials, and trying to reconcile them within the same picture or sequence of moving images. To me contradictions can and should co-exist in the same artwork: perspectival illusion vs. flattened perspective, high-key colors vs.muted neutrals, a photograph vs. a pixelated abstraction .  My goal is to colorfully but critically repurpose notions of spectacle and mass mediation through my own pictorial language.

Artist Bio / CV

Jonathan Allen has exhibited at numerous galleries and non-profit spaces in New York, including Lu Magnus, PS122, Socrates Sculpture Park, Artists Space, and BRIC Rotunda Gallery. He's also participated in the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Workspace & Swingspace residency programs and the Bronx Museum of Art’s Artist in the Marketplace program, and has been awarded residencies at the Bogliasco Foundation in Italy, Cill Rialaig in Ireland, and Blue Mountain Center. A recipient of grants from the Pollock-Krasner, Puffin, and George Sugarman Foundations, his recent solo shows include exhibitions with Lu Magnus in New York, Real Arte in Italy, GoNorth in Beacon, and Buffalo Art Studio in Buffalo. He holds a B.A. in Visual Arts/Art History from Columbia University, and currently lives in Brooklyn.

His most recent solo exhibition, LOADING, opened in September 2013. This exhibition centered around the idea of LOADING as a metaphor for cultural and information processing in the digital age. He collaborated with poet Anselm Berrigan on this show, who wrote a suite of 12 new poems using LOADING as a theme. He also produced his first stop motion video and collaborated with choreographer Joanna Kotze on a performance piece.

He is represented in New York by Lu Magnus and in Italy by Real Arte.
