Artist Statement

1.  Locus of Momentum – Bicycle Drawing
I ride my bicycle every day in New York City. In this series, I use the same bicycle to make drawings. By riding on top of the laid-out surface, I create a mark between the tire and the paper with graphite powder. The quality of a line directly shows the physics of the act (gravity, momentum, inertia, pressure, friction and so on.) The patterns on the rubber tire imprint itself on the surface as my weight causes the pressure between the tire and paper. It is a line but it's also a record of the sequential moments of my travel on the wheels.
This echoes with the movement of my life in New York. I love to ride swiftly in the city's landscape. I want to live swiftly my New York life. These drawings are expression of the movement I make in everyday life.

2. Reflections – Water Sculpture Project
Seeing the street lamps and buildings of New York City reflected in rain puddles made me aware of how the pace of modern life causes us to overlook the remarkable in our surroundings. Water may seem the simplest of art materials, but I have found tremendous possibilities in its flexibility or fluidity and its reflective qualities. Experimenting with these properties, I seek a balance between the element of chance and my own meticulous preparations.
The sculptures are a series of continual discoveries in which an everyday visual phenomenon—the reflections that appear in pools of water—reveals a new dimension in the physical spaces all around us, and thereby engenders nothing less than a new appreciation for one’s environment.

3. Treaties – Tea Prints
This series is works on paper created with tea leaves, based on digital image from the internet. Original images are low-resolution-images of historical treaties. I blow up the images and manipulate it for screen printing, and then transfer it to the silk screen. I print the image with colorless glue on paper through the silk screen, and while it’s wet, sprinkle dry tea leaves on top of it before I shake off the excess. I spray the piece with lacquer to fix the tea leaves on paper.
