Artist Statement

My drawings inventory the details of particular experiences using pictographic forms to create a “text.” The majority of the drawings sent are about the last few year’s travel and work, most of which was connected to depicting the material elements of scientific research. The newest work is from a 2-month residency in Antarctica. Landscapes, portraits and objects from all aspects of Antarctica life from the historical to the current scientific are included in an eight drawing piece entitled Ninety Degree Draft. Also included are drawings of all I brought to and took back from Antarctica. In addition are the drawings about time spent on the Galapagos Islands, with drawings of the contents of 2 laboratories at the Charles Darwin Foundation and a journal-like scroll of “snapshots.” Drawings from time spent on anocean research vessel are included as well.

Earlier projects have included drawing everything I own, the contents of women’s bags and an ongoing series of drawings about the things purchased with our tax dollars. Included in the tax money series are 2 series of drawings chronicling the casualties from the war in Iraq. Wrapped in the Flag depicts coalition troop losses, and consists of rows of small silhouetted figures (over 4500), each filled with a portion of the appropriate national flag, then labeled with the soldier’s name / age. Collateral Damage documents civilian casualties, mainly Iraqi. Pencil silhouettes are filled in with white pencil, many identified by name/ age. Over 18,000 figures have been drawn so far, a tiny fraction of the reality. Together there are now 35 scrolls 5’ by 1’ wide and the project continues.
