I examine the linear language of drawing in sculptural space through site-responsive installations and works on paper. Both bodies of work embrace and subvert conventional associations of the autographic mark. In the installations, which are largely temporal, I deploy a variety of synthetic materials to invade, interpret and confound the architectural parameters of a given space. In the “Polyglot” series, areas of visual commotion impinge on the paper’s edge and transpose my investigations into folded, punctured, smudged and layered zones of geometric and expressionistic gestures. My work is informed by my great interest in film and fiction. In both bodies of work, my aim is to construct a noirish interior landscape of perceptual incident and psychological dis-ease.

Gelah Penn's work has been exhibited widely, including solo exhibitions at Carl Berg Projects (Los Angeles, CA); Real Art Ways (Hartford, CT); Rowan University Art Gallery (Glassboro, NJ); and Kentler International Drawing Space (Brooklyn, NY). Group exhibitions include the National Academy Museum, Lori Bookstein Fine Art, Lesley Heller Workspace, Smack Mellon, Sculpture Center and Jason McCoy Gallery (NYC); Jancar Gallery (Los Angeles, CA); Clark University (Worcester, MA); Brattleboro Museum (VT); and the Itami Museum of Arts and Crafts (Itami, Japan). Her work is in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Gund Library of the Cleveland Institute of Art, and the Columbus Museum (GA), and has been reviewed in numerous publications, including Art in America, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Brooklyn Rail and a feature in Sculpture Magazine. She has received support from the Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation and the MacDowell Colony. Her work can be seen in the Weatherspoon Art Museum’s Art on Paper Biennial in Greensboro, NC in fall 2014 and a solo exhibition at Melville House, Brooklyn in early 2015. She is co-curating, with artist Inna Babaeva, the exhibition “OBJECT ‘HOOD” at Lesley Heller Workspace and the exhibition “Diphthong,” with artist/critic Stephen Maine, at the Fitterman Center for the Arts at BMCC in NYC in 2015.
