Artist Statement

“One can see better from the periphery than from the centre.”

Ann Lauterbach

Partial narrative, representations of a fragmented whole and knowledge are collected through direct experience and observation of the physical and social shifts within a mobile environment, that of the city. Images are rendered contingent on specific locations and architectures in such a way so as to complicate “complete” understanding of subject through the absence and manipulation of key visual information. These complications are generated through the use of photographic negative, perspectival shifts, multiples, dualities, gesture and context.

Personal photographs documenting my movement through the city combined with appropriated imagery act as pieces of a whole narrative. I’m interested in the intersection of active experience and passive absorption of information that combine to shape impressions of our environment

Working with fragments of images allows me to present a vision that contains gaps, gaps that represent missing information. This missing information is an entry point into the work allowing for personal narrative to be interjected. Shadows and light interchange as structures and spaces are suggested, city grids emerge and disappear in a mass of points transforming a map into an abstraction, much like the stars in the sky in their order that to us appears random and chaotic.
