Artist Statement

The hybrid relationship and tension between technical and biological material is the central subject of Judith Fegerl’s work. "Fegerl’s approach can be understood as the transmedial development of a motif. Abstract signs are transcribed into the spatial-material, the acoustic into the graphic and vice versa. The transcription process itself constitutes a generative circuit. One piece leads to the next, with each implicitly participating in the other. Fegerl in her mediating and translating capacity, connects diverse medial and semiotic levels."* Fur objects, sculpture-growing machines, autistic systems, mechanic voices, semi-organic patterns and perceptual installations are parts of Judith Fegerl's body of work. Her works on paper are delicate arrangements, almost installations themselves contextually augmenting the sculptural pieces.

Judith Fegerl lives and works in Vienna and Berlin and is currently artist in residence at the ISCP in New York.
