Artist Statement

My work is an investigation of definitions, boundaries, selections and connections. It explores the liminal space between things which are considered established, and questions the relationships between them.

Identity Tapestry is a particapatory installation project.  Each participant draws an image of their identity by taking a color of yarn (every single color is different) and using it to mark statements along the wall they feel identify who they ar.  As more people mark their identity a compex tapestry of overlapping identities is formed.  More at http://www.marymarch.com/Identity_Tapestry.html.

Exquisite Corps is a collaborative Online drawing piece at http://www.exquisite-corps.com/ based on the Da-Da Exquisite Corpse excercise, but allowing for mulptiple outcomes to any single stage.  Nineteen artists from around the world took part in this project, several of whom are Drawing Center registry members.

Dream Blanket is an interactive piece in which viewers write and weave a personal dream into the piece to create a shared Dream Blanket.

The pieces in the Binary Drawings Series went through processes both immediate and analytical. The people shown go through many filters; interpreted by one artist, reinterpreted by another, and then broken down into binary data while retaining some human rawness.  They confront us with the theoretically infinite things which binary format can express or describe.  Printed on 18” x 24” paper, they recall their nature as drawings.

The Unconscious Exchange Series are a nod to the "exquisite corpse" exercises and exchanges that the surrealists and Da Da artists had between each other. They also begin with chance, but continue as a dialog between the artist's stream-of-consciousness and the computer. Each individual piece is the collection of the drawings that reveals the dialog of "moves".

Like many contemporary artists, I do not limit my materials. I choose the medium which best suits the concept, history and the sensory experience for the work. My work includes drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, performance, digital work, fiber, and combinations of all of the above and more.
