Artist Statement

These images represent a series of unique prints on paper. Each image is derived from a set of woodcut plates that are inked, manipulated and combined to result in a series of codependent and loosely related forms. Like making a mark, cutting into wood can achieve a very aggressive, hard-edged, and graphic language. However, I am interested in balancing a kind of tension between competing visual signs. Through the dissolution of borders, I locate a more fluid and liminal state of suspension within the work. It is these contradictions that make up the resulting structure and overall object-like form in each piece. Decisions are recorded and a entity emerges that feels heavy yet malleable. The kinetic and improvisational feeling of making multiples is translated into a monothilic object with its own structure. For me, the primal immediacy of cutting into wood is transformed through the more sensuous movement of repetition and change. Tempered with a greater feeling of levity, each form represents something ethereal and out of reach, but tangible as the line that maps it's contours.
