Artist Statement
Active in my practice is an investigation of interrelationships. This examination takes place through the construction of small models, drawings and installations. Formally, patterns, methods of construction and materials are reflected in each other. In a wider context it is concerned with the relations between myself and the viewer, my intention and the result, the 'real' and the perceived or experienced. The practice aims to simultaneously explore the physicality of the materials, the story revealed by their construction and the resulting symbolic suggestions.

The drawings and objects I make motivate and inform each other. The process initiates conversations between the objects, the drawings, and the space where they are made and placed – examining the relationship between the studio environment and the work made there.

Looking at these connections has established a belief that the link between these elements forms a third force, the energy of the interrelations of things. This provides the anchor from which the rest of my practice orbits.

When working in studio I have no predetermined plan. There is an underlining interest in the accidental, in geometry and the whimsical. I have adopted a ‘learn through approach’ where actions and methods form a self-referential system on which the work is built. In this approach the meaning is inextricably linked to making, to the materials and to the processes employed. Within these situations of indeterminacy decisions become intuitive and the role of the viewer is vital.

The notion of 'entering into' is central to my practice. The immersive installations I build investigate meaning. They are spaces where meaning is grasped on a personal level, where the experience becomes embodied, appropriated and takes hold within the viewer forming further permutations and possibilities.
