Artist Statement
For me, “the Office” is not only a source of materials, imagery and processes, such as stapling, but a place where I have spent many hours. I started out making narrative paintings about the repetition and monotony of working at a desk, but over the last five years I have followed the impulse to work with three-dimensional objects. Using a hole-punch and snipping the edges of computer paper, I thought about a misfeed or something that went wrong. Lately, representational elements have emerged as in “Flowers,” which combines thumbtacks and cotton balls soaked in watercolor with leaves cut from the foam core support. I am fascinated with the color found in these readily available materials. Each element already has a color that is so familiar that they are often taken for granted such as the reds of the dot stickers that make up “Snake.” All of these pieces explore environments that I have experienced either at work or outside the office—the beach and the garden—where my mind wanders.
