Artist Statement

My work is centered on the phenomena of the two-dimensional line encoded with three-dimensional potential. I draw on paper, copper, plaster and in the landscape using handmade tools that incorporate eroding, fracturing and state-shifting processes. The current works aim to connect the viewer to those places where we may witness the long forces that are shaping our environment. I see the line as a our basic tool and I ask it a lot of questions:

An architect makes a line and calls it a wall, a structure. A line is broken for access and light.

An archaeologist brushes layers of dust until the bristles distinguish between artifact and sediment, matrix and substrate.

A geologist traces a vector of mineral visualizing the multivalent forces and matter no longer present.

In this selection of drawings, the lines are drawn one at a time, tracing a fracture: the instant separating construction and destruction. The repeated tracing of a fragment (found and manipulated) wears down the break, smoothing its edge, transforming the line and the resulting figure. I am also interested in the state-changing, chemical interactions in nature that define our visual environment. If charcoal represents a scorching, the remains of a fire, iron oxide represents the interaction of water and metal. Using materials that reference the natural world, my physical process reveals the the actions, wear and trauma that resonates on both a geological and human scale.
