Artist Statement

EMILY ELMAN

               ARTIST’S STATEMENT

The still lives are set up using a vase of
fresh flowers arranged in front of a previously
painted watercolor of the sunrise.  Each sunrise
painting is specifically selected to interact
with the particular group of flowers.
Consideration of their relationship is ongoing:
their connection in terms of luminous color,
their interplay of value and their movement
both forward and into depth.

The flowers and the sunrise are both vehicles
for color, light and luminosity. I find that my
true subject is the intensity produced by the
contrast and similarity of color and value.

    Thank you,

     Emily
