Artist Statement

My recent work reveals my curiosity with perception through an exploration of the natural world, cosmology, mythology and theoretical physics. For example, parallel universes are a theory that helps explain why quantum material behaves so erratically. And black holes represent a non-visible aspect of reality. They suggest disappearance and invisibility, with a singularity at their centre where space and time cease to exist as we know them.

In Every Direction is a bookwork consisting of images and text. There is no narrative- it's more of an incomplete collection of information that describes overlapping mental and physical environments. There are refernces to (among other things) sound and movement though time and space, in and out of intensity and in and out of focus.

The constellation images are drawings based on specific constellations. I drew all of the stars within a given constellation boundary and then drew lines connecting each star with every other star within that constellation’s boundaries. The resulting images contain the original constellation, though it is buried beneath all of the other possible options.

The tree images are part of a series of individual drawings based on native trees of Canada. In mythology, trees often represent a connection between worlds, an axis mundi connecting earth and sky and are an important part of the structure of the universe.  These images suggest the point of crossover between known and unknown worlds. They are landscape drawings of visible and non-visible realities.
