Synaptic Connections

In September of 2003 I found a new dynamic and new means of expression in a body of work that includes more than three hundred drawings and twenty sculptures executed over a three-year period. These works explore connections to our surroundings and our inner-self. Through the primal act of drawing a unique vision is realized where bold monolithic sculptural shapes are scribed into, grow out of, and interact with the edges of the page. Images read like volumetric, inkblot tests and the paper becomes litmus for recording the moment.

A similar dynamic is established in my sculpture where all the energy, tension and fluidity of the drawings are imbued in bent wood organic structures that fold into and out of space. The structures become alive, embodied with potential energy and work

The ideas behind this work are organic in nature and stem from philosophical studies of the rhizome, where everything relates to everything else. These pieces explore current theories in molecular biology, the cultivation of organs, synaptic connections and the alignment of proteins. They are dynamic, fresh, interactive explorations that investigate how we become who we are.
