Artist Statement
I am interested in showing the virtuosity of pencil and pen in a context that is made evocative through technique and imagery.

In many instances I use nature as inspiration, pushing real into surreal.  I draw upon the graceful lines found in nature and inject incongruity into that familiar imagery. The product is a 'dream' which is vaguely uncomfortable but none the less compelling.  The idea is to mimic the hope that seemingly hopeless entanglements are salvageable in a world of meaning.  I believe that complexity and simplicity are themselves flip sides of the same coin.  The further one moves in one direction, the more likely the paradox will reveal itself.  To say that I am striving for transcendence would not be out of order.

As for the abstract work, on some level it is certainly a vehicle upon which to work out obsessive compulsions and aesthetic dilemmas without the constraints of  a "setting". These drawings are primarily the product of an automatic revelation that renews itself continuously throughout.  Pre-planning is minimal, with most decisions precedent upon aesthetic conditions which emerge along the way.
