The scope of my research is about testing the natural boundaries of the Body and Mind as they have been defined in time by the arts and sciences and to inquire into the need we have of projecting the Self beyond our physical limits into a higher dimension.
The latest innovations in the fields of science and medicine have opened new doors in the endavor of self-analysis: cloning and genetic manipulation can potentially give us the ultimate tool for self replication that up until now has been achieved through the traditional and more natural means of sexual reproduction and cultural arts. Now we could project into the future a physical copy of ourselves by means of cloning, finally challenging the biological limits that always cramped our desire for immortality. But in breaking those limits we also would permit the darkest projections of our Ego to become real: improbable therianthopes, unviable creatures, Hollywood monsters.
In creating the "Hybrid" series, I produced a set of "Scientific Sublime" monsters that could escape from our Myths into the real world and obtain the paradoxical effect of science becoming irrational: the insomnia of rationality produces monsters. The replication of the Self not just by cultural means but also in the body, in the flesh through the latest scientific techniques, clearly has mystical implications, but it also describes the inward moving spiral manifested by our oversized ego.
My work, through the re-appropriation of mythical creatures, represents a symbolic hybrid whose intent is to prompt a reaction by stimulating the viewer's subconscious, always mantaining a certain irony; my monsters are never pretentious and didactic, but rather tend to make fun of themselves and, as our own projections, of us.
