Artist Statement

The subject and conceptual point of departure of my work is the continued worldwide acceleration and impact of change on biological organisms and processes.  I am both fascinated and appalled by how humans have affected nature, changing not only interior and exterior form of individual creatures, but entire ecosystems.  As an artist, I am drawn to the visual manifestations of these changes, and so gather images from scientific text, direct observation of nature, and also contemporary design.

In my paintings and drawings I connect fragmented pieces of biological and inorganic imagery creating imagined environments and altered relationships.  On the one hand, these illogical compositions refer to the adaptations that organisms must go through to adapt to severe and rapid change to which they are now being subjected.  They are my way of calling attention to the harm being done to our planet.  On the other hand, I find these images so beautiful and compelling that working often becomes pure visual play.
