Artist Statement

"It would be like supposing that a play of Shakespeare is changed when a reader spills his tea over a page."

  G.H. Hardy

Many people have an idea of Hamlet. Quite different from person to person. There is no real play though. No Text, only texts. We work hard to preserve the individual texts - from scribes to movable presses to photocopiers to digital reproductions. Each leaves its stamp on the text, compounding over time until we can't disentangle the qualities of the copy from the qualities of its source. Perhaps we could file this accretion of effects under style. After all, what does practice accomplish except for reinforcing, compiling and refining these idiosyncrasies in recording.

I am just a scribe. The images I work from are prepared with the help of a photocopier from generations of images of damaged manuscripts, illustrations and pages of text: a sort of phantasia of the book. The drawings we are left with are little aids to reflection, drawings of writing, copies of gestures, original reproductions - shadows and their reflections.
