Artist Statement
In my works I invite to an intimate relationship with drawn studies of Nature and the intervention of humans. The images cast both a critical and skewed glance at reality, where horror and humor serve to push familiar elements towards abstraction and ambiguity. A surreal versus a confidential reality. I integrate elements of Nature, symbols from the history of Art and documentary images and texts, and an unpredictable associative stream emerges, images that may be disturbing to both gaze and thought. I use this to pull the viewer into a seemingly beautiful and non-committal experience of Nature with elements of estheticized realism. I draw here on the familiarity and sense of security that is prevalent in Norwegian art history. The landscape concerns us all; we identify with it and feel a strong sense of ownership of tradition and the recognizable. In this familiar landscape, I pencil in unknown factors, zoom in, and enlarge details that become new side stories. A fundamental issue in the images is an experience of attraction as well as repulsion, where the images are first read as beautiful, until you notice that something terrible is about to happen, or has already taken place. In the images, I introduce more details that are invisible to the cursory glance, but emerge as the eye familiarizes itself with the drawing and wanders around in it.

I relate emotionally to the reality of Nature in Art, but at the same time, a moral and ethical point of view is present in my work.
My life with dogs and my work for animal rights form a fundamental set of values for my works and help supply substance to the stories.
The drawings are made in pencil, incorporating a technique of collage. The medium of drawing becomes both the filter and the glue that combine the different elements in a non-linear narrative in an image comprising both simple sketches and texts and a near photorealistic expression.
