Artist Statement

The construction of my work relies on the combining and emulation of styles. I string together various sources -- combining architecture, color and composition from different traditions to create a landscape. Rock formations reference Italian frescoes, while the abbreviated vegetable forms are derived from illuminated manuscripts and wallpaper patterns. The atmospheric color fades, done by lithograph, are similar to the bokashi technique used in Japanese woodblock prints.

The 3-dimensional format of recent work is derived from my work with cut paper in artists books. In my practice, the tunnel book is my format of choice. Tunnel books are an antique book form where an accordion fold creates a multi-layered scene that is viewed through a peephole. They are made of 6-10 levels of cut paper that create an inherently theatrical view. I have applied this format to flat work using a tab mechanism borrowed from pop-ups. The paper layers create floating frames around the landscapes of rock, clouds and vegetation.
