Artist Statement

My artistic practice examines how images become invested with meaning and how that process relies on contingencies of culture, medium, history and display. While my practice crosses various media and disciplines, and works with different source material, this philosophical investigation is at the heart of all of the work. At times I am interested in asking specifically about problems of representation and the ability of an image to reliably embody meaning; at others I am using the world of images to metaphorically work out questions about our desire to find meaning in the world, and to convince ourselves that any meaning we find there was immanent and embodied, rather than constructed or a product of our own consciousness. I find myself attracted to ambiguity, to puns, and to instability, as each of these things highlight how fleeting and arbitrary any given meaning can be.

I am also very interested in the ideas of the beautiful and the sublime. I am struck that the more that any intentional meaning is drained from an image, and the more it points to the arbitrary and fleeting nature of meaning, the more beautiful it seems to get. If there is any truth to the ancient assumptions about the relationship of truth and beauty, this is a very heartening thought: there is no immanent meaning to be found and that is beautiful. I would hope, too, that these images put a viewer in touch with their drive to find meaning in them, to have an encounter with their own consciousness, and that in this moment of seeing oneself sensing there is an experience of the sublime.
