Artist Statement

Based on my childhood experience of attending painting classes in a natural history museum, my mixed-media installations explore the artifice found in many museum dioramas and displays. My installations involve replicas of wildlife and geological elements carefully constructed from inappropriate materials. These decidedly abject imitations are presented in a formal manner suggesting the distanced sense of suspended belief engendered by many museum displays. Certainly the intention is to inform our understanding of the world, yet the efforts often seem to confirm the fact that we live a disconnected existence in a world filled with failures played out on a grand scale.

Images  #1-11 are of When Hell Freezes Over, an installation based on a recent trip to Newfoundland. The installation features humorous replications of elements found in Twillingate’s tiny seaside Durrell Museum. This folksy museum appears to be the creation of a well-intentioned but slightly misinformed PTA committee featuring primitive displays of Styrofoam icebergs and naive paintings earnestly placed alongside a taxidermied polar bear. Images #12-15 are of Dominion an installation inspired by a damaged French school map of colonial Africa. The title Dominion references “The Dark Continent’s” history of colonialism, exploitation of indigenous peoples and wildlife, and the degradation of a primal landscape.
