Artist Statement

JUNE M0SS

I'M DRAWN TO FIGURATION AS THE ESSENTIAL BOND BETVVEEN GESTURE AND FUNCTION IN THE HUMAN FORM. INITIALLY, MY PAINTINGS WERE STRONGLY COLORED NARRATIVES, PAINTERLY AND CHOREOGRAPHED. MY ATTRACTION TO THE ACT OF PAINTING COMES FROM AN APPRECIATION OF THE SURFACE AND THE ABILITY TO MANIPULATE MEDIA TO EMOTIONAL EFFECT.

I WAS INTRIGUED THAT THE CALCIFIED MUMMIES IN GUANAJUATO, MEXICO EMBRACED THE SAME FRAME OF `HUMANNESS’ AS AN INFANTS FIRST STEPS OR A STOP ACTION NEWS PHOTO. THE BODY POSTURES EVERY EFFORT OR REACTION.

I BEGAN A SERIES OF MONOPRINTS FROM A STEEL PLATE IMPRESSION ON FINE PAPERS. THE QUALITY OF HAPPENSTANCE ENHANCED THE FREEDOM IN MY DRAWING. REDUCING THE AMOUNT OF INFORMATION INCLUDED IN THE COMPOSITION HELPED CONCENTRATE THE ECONOMY OF THE IMAGE.

EVENTUALLY I ARRIVED AT THE METHOD I AM NOW USING. WORKING DIRECTLY ON A FAST SURFACE AFFORDS ME CONTROL WITHOUT SACRIFICING SPONTANETIY, COMBINING THE STRUCTURE OF DRAWING WITH THE SENSUALITY OF PAINT.
